Hairline: Psychology of Perception

The hairline (front of forelock) is the most important region of the hairy scalp. Especially the hairline is responsible for determining a persons age. It is astonishing how great the effect of rejuvenation in a balding man with a lowered hairline is. Perhaps you have mentioned this wearing a periwig in carnival. You also can make sure of it using a photo of you and drawing on it a lowered hairline.
The perception and assessment of the hairline happens to a big extent unconsciously. Especially the central 10 cm of the hairline ensure the unconscious visual pattern recognition in the classification of the scalp hair. If these central 10 cm still are relatively low situated and additionally of adequate density, the scalp hair will be classified as to be full all in all.

In younger patients with favourable parameters an even twice as dense hair line (dense packing) can be chosen. Important in the hairline is the use of single grafts in the very front (approx. the first 5 millimeters), followed by a mixture of single, double and a few triple grafts in the adjacent 5 mm. This helps to create the soft look of a natural hairline.

The universal genius Leonardo da Vinci not only left behind us the inscrutable smile of Mona Lisa, but built up on the exploratory work of the antic masters Polyklet and Vitruvius,  also a perception formula to gauge human facial harmony, the so called canon of ideal facial proportion. Da Vinci has found that a certain symmetry is necessary to gauge unconsciously a human face as being harmonic. This symmetry arises out of the perfect relationship between three horizontal parts of the human face. The first part reaches from the bottom edge of the chin to the tip of the nose, the second part starts on the tip of the nose and reaches to the top edge of the eyebrows and the third part starts on the top edge of the eyebrows and reaches to the hairline. If now all these three parts have rather the same height, the face will be classified unconsciously as being harmonic. In hair transplant surgery the use of this formula offers the great chance to create the perfect hairline for every individual patient.

But when applying this formula to any desired Hollywood star, taking in mind the following:
Male Hollywood-stars very often have an unnatural pronounced chin because this prevailed in actors as an appreciated ultra-optimal signum of virility. The above pictured true to scale fan-drawing of a very popular Hollywood star illustrates this phenomenon: Even in the absence of a scale you easily can imagine that though the upper two thirds of the face have rather the same height, the lower third including the chin is markedly higher than those.

The importance of the triangles of the temples

The triangles of the temples (synonym: temporal points) are the triangular shaped areas of hair, where the temporal hairline meets the sideburns. Nearly nowhere you will find information about it. However, we have found in intensive studies that even these regions to an operative extent contribute to a harmonic face. Well developed triangles of the temples have an important quantum of the youthfulness of a face. Therefore our attention also applies to this region. The hairs in the triangles of the temples will fall out later than in the hairline. Because this area is smaller than that of a 1cm-wide hairline and furthermore its hair density is markedly lower than in the hairline, you can reach good results with relative few grafts.
